History & Lore

Located on the outskirts of Cluj-Napoca, the Hoia Baciu Forest has been a hotspot for paranormal activity since biologist Alexandru Sift documented strange phenomena there in the 1950s. The site gained international attention in 1968 when military technician Emil Barnea photographed a disc-shaped object above the tree line — a photograph that remains one of the most studied UFO images in European ufology.

The forest is distinguished by a near-circular clearing roughly 250 metres in diameter where nothing grows, despite the surrounding soil being fertile. Trees in the area grow in twisted, contorted forms with no botanical explanation. Visitors frequently report feelings of anxiety, nausea, and disorientation, time distortions, and physical symptoms including rashes and burns that appear without contact with any plant or surface.

Local Romanian legend holds that the souls of peasants killed on this land are unable to rest, bound to the forest in perpetual torment. The name itself derives from a shepherd named Baciu who allegedly disappeared into the clearing with his entire flock of 200 sheep, never to be found.
